Judith’s Experience

Today I woke up at 7:00 and did a series of exercises in bed, had breakfast, and practiced my violin. Then I rode the Nu Step bike for 15 minutes and used the elliptical machine for 5 minutes. When that was done, I got dressed and my husband and I headed out for Columbus. I drove an hour of that trip. We visited with a friend for two hours and then went to a dinner meeting. We left at 6:30 and drove back and arrived home at 8:30.  I took only two pain pills all day and had almost NO pain. I am very excited about that!

“Believe it or not my pain has decreased to about 50 percent of what it was and sometimes more! I am so pleased with this. I find it hard to believe. Sometimes I now have small periods of time when I have no pain…”Judy Doyle

Why am I excited? I have had back therapy on and off for over 10 years. I have scoliosis, spinal stenosis and the effects of that have been significant pain.  I started Schroth Therapy one year ago. While it appeared I was improving my posture, my pain was not improving but seeming to get worse. I did over three months of this therapy and did exercises for TWO hours a day. While it appeared I was improving my posture, my pain was not but instead seeming to get worse.

Working with Cynthia Allen was suggested to me by several friends. I began seeing her several months ago seeing her once a week for a month and then went to twice a month. I have just finished one of her 6 weekly classes series.

Cynthia’s approach based in the Feldenkrais Method is quite different from physical therapy.  The Feldenkrais treatment is not like PT where you do a lot of repetitive exercises. It is quite individualized, adapted to the needs of my spine and my lifestyle.  We concentrate on functional movements like getting in and out of the car, sitting down and standing up, getting in and out of bed, walking and being balanced and more. I tell her what I want to improve and she creates a lesson just for me.

Believe it or not my pain has decreased to about 50 percent of what it was and sometimes more! I am so pleased with this. I find it hard to believe. Sometimes I now have small periods of time when I have no pain. I currently need a smaller amount of pain medication that before. And I find my brace important when doing certain activities. I am a very active person which is what I want for my life.
