This is one reason why people can do all the “right” foot pain treatments and still feel stuck. The nervous system may still believe that gripping, bracing, or offloading is the safest option available. Carol also emphasizes what she calls the prime directive of the nervous system: safety and survival.

 

Your nervous system is always responding to gravity—the invisible force that is present in everything you do. It is continually organizing muscles, joints, balance, and posture so you can stay upright and not fall down.

 

This helps explain why pain and stiffness don’t always change just because you stretch more or try harder. If the nervous system does not feel safe, it may keep gripping, bracing, or offloading in the same familiar way. That’s why the Feldenkrais approach begins with comfort, ease, and curiosity rather than force: it creates conditions where the nervous system can sense safety and begin considering another option.

All movement is patterned—and patterns can change

Carol’s final “secret” is both humbling and hopeful: all function is patterned movement.

 

Walking, standing, turning, balancing, and even the way you distribute weight through your feet are all organized through patterns. Most of those patterns are unconscious, shaped over time by injury, habit, stress, overuse, underuse, and the countless ways the body adapts to life.

 

The nervous system is remarkably good at compensation. It can protect an injured area and find ways to keep you moving long after something has gone wrong. But compensation has limits. As Carol says, the nervous system can only compensate up to a point.

For a while, the body can compensate beautifully. It can recruit extra muscles, stiffen a joint, shift weight, or create clever workarounds to help you keep going.

 

But eventually, many people hit what Cynthia calls a “brick wall.”

 

The system runs out of wiggle room. There are no more easy ways to shuffle the stress around. The compensations that once helped you function begin to create pain of their own. At that point, the discomfort can feel constant, confusing, and resistant to treatment—not because the body is failing, but because the nervous system has become stuck in a narrow way of organizing movement.

 

When the brain has only one strategy available, that strategy gets overused. Chronic foot pain often begins there.

A Real-Life Case Study: Finding Relief Through Awareness

Jannie’s 15-Year Struggle With Foot Pain

To illustrate how these patterns work, Carol shares the story of Jannie, a 63-year-old runner who had struggled with right foot and ankle pain for 15 years.

 

Jannie was not inactive. She did yoga, trail ran, wore compression wraps, and had tried physical therapy, orthotics, and anti-inflammatory approaches. Still, her right foot remained “the weaker of the two.” She felt wobbly during standing poses, tenderness after runs, and ongoing stiffness that never fully resolved.

 

When Carol observed Jannie over Zoom, she noticed something Jannie herself had never recognized: she consistently sat and stood with her weight shifted strongly to the right. That asymmetrical organization had become Jannie’s unconscious midline—her nervous system’s default way of orienting to gravity.

 

In other words, her foot pain was not just a foot problem. It was part of a whole-body pattern.

What Changed in a 20-Minute Awareness Through Movement Lesson

Instead of beginning with the painful ankle, Carol took a top-down approach.

 

She had Jannie sit in a chair with one foot supported on a small box so that her pelvis, spine, and torso could begin to explore new options for shifting and turning. The movements were small, slow, and comfortable. There was no aggressive stretching, strengthening, or pushing through discomfort.

 

The goal was not to force the foot to change. The goal was to help Jannie become aware of how she organized herself.

 

As Jannie gently explored weight shifting and reaching, her brain began receiving new sensory information. It started to recognize that it did not have to keep stacking her body over the right side in the same rigid way. By the end of the 20-minute Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lesson, Jannie stood up and found that the pain was gone. She could angle her foot more freely and even do tree pose with far less wobbling—something that had felt unavailable for years.

If the pelvis is chronically tilted, if the head is pulled off center, or if one side of the torso is habitually shortened, the foot often has to absorb the consequences.

One of Carol’s most useful “anatomy pearls” is the relationship between major joints that influence whole-body organization.

 

The body contains many joints, but the ball-and-socket relationships are especially important because they allow large, multidirectional movement and have a strong influence on how the nervous system organizes action. We usually think of the hips and shoulders first, but these relationships also help us understand how movement in one area affects another.

 

For example, Carol points to the way the base of the skull relates to the pelvis. The bony contours at the base of the skull mirror, in some ways, the shape and orientation of the sitting bones in the pelvis. This is one reason changes in head position can influence the entire spine and lower body.

How Head Position Influences Foot Function

Because the nervous system is deeply concerned with keeping the eyes level and the head oriented in space, even subtle changes in the jaw, neck, or skull can influence the pelvis—and ultimately the feet.

 

A tight jaw, a tilted head, or chronic tension around the neck can create a chain reaction downward. The pelvis may counter-tilt. Weight may shift more heavily into one leg. One foot may begin gripping the floor more than the other in order to stabilize the body.

 

This doesn’t mean every case of foot pain comes from the jaw. But it does mean the feet are often responding to forces and habits that begin far away from the place where the symptoms are felt.

 

When you understand the body as an integrated system rather than a collection of separate parts, the causes of foot pain start to make more sense.

Try This Awareness Through Movement Exploration

If you’d like to explore this for yourself, to truly understand how to influence the nervous system, try a simple seated lesson inspired by the one Jannie used. This is not about stretching or exercising the foot. It’s about noticing how your nervous system organizes weight and effort.

 

Sit near the front of a chair with both feet flat on the floor. Let your spine be easy and upright without forcing yourself to “sit up straight.”

A Simple Seated Movement Lesson

Then gently explore the following:

  1. Close your eyes and notice where you feel more weight on the chair seat.
  2. Do you feel more pressure through the right side of the pelvis or the left?
  3. Keep both feet on the floor and slowly lift your right arm toward the ceiling.
  4. As you reach upward, notice what happens to the pressure on the chair.
  5. Does your weight shift more to one buttock, thigh, or side of the pelvis?
  6. Lower the arm and rest.
  7. Repeat slowly with the left arm and compare the experience.

Move slowly enough that you can feel changes in pressure rather than simply “doing the exercise.”

As you explore, stay curious about:

  • which side of the chair feels heavier
  • whether one foot presses more firmly into the floor
  • whether lifting one arm changes the pressure under the opposite hip
  • whether you hold your breath or tighten your jaw
  • whether one side of your torso shortens or braces

This kind of awareness may seem simple, but it can reveal a great deal about the movement habits contributing to chronic foot pain.

 

Jannie discovered that her weight consistently shifted to the right—even when reaching with the left arm. Once her nervous system experienced other ways of organizing the movement, the strain on her foot began to decrease almost immediately.
