A 7-week course – attend live or on replay
With Cynthia Allen, GCFP, STMI

Remap your sensory motor cortex to unravel deeply entrenched muscle memory, so new possibilities in repetitive movements can arise.

Freedom in movement requires: Fluidity, rhythm, ease and nuance.

This series is NOT just for musicians. It’s for anyone who wants to counteract the effects that repetitive movement can have on the body. Be prepared to be transformed by these classic Feldenkrais® “Bowing” lessons that focus on freeing the arms, creating responsiveness in the torso, and providing relief for sore shoulders and stiff necks.

Do you struggle with any of these?

In today’s society, it is rare that one is exempt from using their fingers, hands, and arms in repetitive ways. Repetitive means strenuous, even if you are only “working” your smartphone or a computer keyboard. Whether you are playing in a symphony orchestra, chopping vegetables as a sous chef, laying bricks at the worksite, or knitting in a chair, you are asking your body to do something it wasn’t really designed to do–hours of repetitive and focused movement.

Sadly, the music our bodies produce while doing these tasks isn’t all that harmonious. Most of us ignore the ache, or push through the strain because we simply don’t know what else to do.

We stretch, take a breath, and then press onward. Over time, the quality of our work deteriorates as does the wear and tear on our body. We come to a full stop when the sound is a CLANG, BANG, or THUD.  Ugh!

Chronic tension and injury become the price of making a living or doing what we love.

But does it have to be that way?

I am offering a resounding NO!

It can be different.

How Does it Work?

In this series, you will learn to distribute effort throughout your body instead of relying solely on those overworked shoulders, or that stressed out neck. You will discover new areas of support for your thoracic and arms. Spreading the support throughout the body means less reliance on those fatigued areas. More comfort in the neck, shoulders, hands, and arms. More freedom in completing daily tasks. More joy in doing the activities you love.

Performance and results are important, but in this series, we will let that go. Our focus will be on improving the experience of being human. Creating a judgement free zone that is safe for the nervous system.

Once safety is established, new possibilities can be explored without creating tension, pain or injury. When your nervous system senses calm, it welcomes change and growth. And that is exactly what you will be giving it.

You CAN train yourself to move better. The result? A more relaxed, less stressed nervous system and a more content, less painful you.

Nonjudgmental, Slow and Gentle, Exploratory

What to expect from this series:

Each class will include:

  • Brief lecture
  • A full-length movement lesson, 45-60 min.
  • A short exploration you can use every day.
  • Live Q&A

Lessons that indicate “Bowing” are an ingenious use of one arm doing a sawing or bowing motion and the other arm acting as the instrument. No bow is required. You don’t even need to have ever enjoyed a single song in your life. Musicality refers to the freedom of your arms to be graceful, strong, supple, and firm.

Week 4

"Bowing" Lesson #2
Our next approximation in more supple ribs and facet joints.

Week 5

A Long, Free Spine
Finding clarity and length in the spine supports overall health and is the starting place for doing any task or hobby.

Week 6

"Bowing" Lesson #3
Going deeper leads to making the fluid changes more reliable.

Week 7

Cardinal Movements of the Head and Neck
The root of many shoulder and arm problems lies in the cervical and thoracic regions, which are areas that everyone can improve.

2 BONUS Lessons Included!

Bonus 1: “Bowing” Lesson #4
You are now a pro at this bowing motion, and yet, you can still improve the neck and rib basket.

Bonus 2: Drawing Circles with an Imaginary Pencil
A fun lesson that brings much needed 3-D motion of the atlas, thorax and pelvis.

TESTIMONIALS

I felt so tall, and I am not tall. But by the end of class, I was tall - my upper chest, my shoulders were just so noticeable in my awareness, and especially this one part on my upper back that I have a scoliosis bend. My awareness went all the way down my spine and into my pelvis. And when I was walking, I felt lanky. I felt like it was a model on the runway, just kind of enjoying the walk. It was wonderful.

I have had amazing changes happening in my body every day. I was a body-worker for many years, but have been stuck in a downward spiraling mode for the past 3 years, after an escalator fall. I recognized my pattern of holding and thinking that are keeping me here. I had no idea what I was getting into when I signed up!

Cynthia is a wealth of knowledge and experience. I have been in pain from multiple sources for years. Injuries, repetitive movement patterns and various illnesses. I have tried every treatment out there. Since starting classes with Cynthia, my body has been listening. My pain signals are slowly softening and becoming quieter. My body is gaining confidence in movement. I can do a little more every day.
